Since I remember I always wanted a Commodore 64 computer, not exactly for BASIC programming nor games, but for its sound. For some reason 8-bit songs captivate me and because I like old PCs I got myself a bare C64. No PSU, no disk drive. 2 projects incoming, here is the first one: a DIY power supply.
Why?
C64 PSUs are very expensive. And simple. And I had almost all the parts to build one ready.
Besides, why not?
Engineering time!
I started with a 9V AC transformer and a broken Apple charger – old style 5V 1A found next to the garbage can. C64 needs about 1A at 5V DC and about 1A at 9V AC. 800mA is close enough for me, besides C64 only uses about 600mA.
Obviously both adapters were a bit mangled – transformer had open primary winding, so I had to solder it back on and Apple charger had a broken USB port. PCB was hurt in the disassembly process, but it didn’t damage anything.
I soldered everything according to this diagram:

… and encased it in the flux can, while using copious amount of both kapton tape and hot glue.
I painted it black for less industral look of the bom… ekhm… ehkm… power supply. What’s more important, time for a test!
Runs great! Now I have to wait for PCBs and parts to arrive from China for second part of my C64 dream.
